Berger Biological Toilet

The film presents an experimental dry toilet building "BBT" for students at the Valley View University in Ghana. The project was supported by the German Federal Ministry of Research and Education as part of the research project "Ecological Development at Valley View University in Accra, Ghana".

Urine and faeces are collected separately for composting and fertilisation of agricultural areas on the campus. Research about hygienic and functional effects were carried out by the University of Hohenheim, Germany, Prof. Dr. J. Sauerborn and Dr. Jörn Germer.

The building was necessary to ensure a comfortable sanitation standard for the dormitory, if water supply fails for the existing flush toilets. Meanwhile, the use of dry toilets is preferred.

The concept and design of all elements were developed by Berger Biotechnik GmbH, Hamburg, Germany. The final design was developed as part of the diploma thesis by Simon Weselmann, Hamburg, Germany.
