FAQs concerning the SAWI biocom Bark Chip Toilet

How is the SAWI biocom Bark Chip Toilet constructed?
The SAWI biocom Bark Chip Toilet consists of a two-part toilet housing (upper part and lower part) and a collecting bin. The collecting bin is subdivided through a horizontal sieve ground into an upper chamber for solid materials (faeces and toilet paper) and a lower chamber for urine and bark chips.

How does the SAWI biocom Bark Chip Toilet function?
After the "big business" bark chips are dispersed over the toilet paper. That causes an immediate odour absorption, prevents the penetration of flies and serves as a visual protection at the next use. The lower chamber is filled with bark chips, so that the ammonia smells of the urine are bound. Parts of the fluid materials evaporate through an air pipe that is led through to the roof (laterally through the wall or through the roof to the top). The toilet room is ventilated (chimney principle) therewith through the toilet and odours do not enter into the room. The contents are emptied onto the compost.

May toilet paper be given into the SAWI biocom Bark Chip Toilet?
Yes, one can use toilet paper without any problems. Because toilet paper consists of cellulose, a product won out of wood, it is broken down by the compost organisms.

Which toilet paper can be used?
Any toilet paper may be used. Paper bleached and/or treated with chemicals such as perfume or wetting agents will however slow down the composting process.

When must the collecting bin be emptied?
The bin should be emptied when the filling volume of the upper or the lower chamber of the collecting bin is filled. This could be the case after ca. 3 weekends and/or 1 week vacation, if 2 people use the toilet permanently. It does not matter in what time period the container is filled.

Where do I empty the collecting bin?
The contents of the collecting bin are supposed to be composted for at least a year. Closed compost bins that are protected against rain are suited best.

How do I empty the collecting bin?
To empty, the upper part of the toilet housing is removed and the collecting bin is lifted out forwards by the handle. A dent on the bottom of the collecting bin makes it easy to empty the contents onto the compost. Through lateral emptying, the sieve ground between lower and upper chamber opens itself, without slipping out. Subsequently one covers the material with wood chips, leaves or lawn cut.

How must the sieve ground be used correctly?
If in the process of emptying the sieve ground should slip out, it is inserted back into the horizontal slit of the vertical partition, so that the lower chamber opens when emptying the collecting bin (folded ledge shows towards the top).

Is it necessary to rinse the container after emptying it?
The solid matter is usually bound by the bark chips. If the collecting bin should need to be cleaned, one requires only little water. This water can be given also onto the compost. As a cleaner, vinegar or grease soap should be used. These substances decompose in the compost quickly. Other cleaners must be collected and disposed separately (eg. domestic flush toilet).

Can I mount a standard toilet seat?
No. The seat is part of the toilets upper part and the lid is adapted to it. This increases the stability of the toilet housing.

Are additions necessary in order to make the toilet frost resistant?
No additions are necessary (such as eg. antifreeze), because the collecting bin is made out of frost proof PE plastic.

When is the connection of an additional air vent leading inward necessary?
The connection is only necessary, if the toilet room is extensively airtight. A door gap eg. of 2 cm of a 80 cm wide door would be sufficient for ventilation.

How are the additional air vent and the air outlet dimensioned?
Both openings are dimensioned for the connection of pipes with a standard diameter of 75 mm (outside diameter).

Can bark chips and toilets also be delivered to small garden communities?
In single orders, a postal address is required. Larger quantities (delivery on a pallet) can be delivered per shipping to a small garden, as far as it is accessible by truck.

Does the toilet smell?
The SAWI biocom bark chips minimize odours (test result "smell reduction: Excellent" test 6/97, Stiftung Warentest, consumer magazine in Germany) through their tannin compounds, that form a natural biochemical reaction with the waste. By negative pressure of the ventilation system, any odours that emerge are vented outwards.

FAQs concerning TOA Mobile Toilets

How does the TOA mobile toilet function?
All TOA models (TOA Standard, TOA Mini, TOA Maxi) work according to the same principle: Before the first use, absorbent and structure rich litter, such as bark chips, is filled into the collecting container. The quantity depends on the expected fluid until the evacuation, so that the solid materials do not lie in the fluids. After defecation, one covers the toilet paper with a handful of litter. This way the refuse is no longer visible and an extensive smell reduction over a period of approx. 3 days is reached. For the transport to the compost and after the use (eg. underway), the collecting container can be locked airtight with a cover. To avoid the soiling of the collecting container and for better comfort when emptying, a decomposable bag can be used.

May toilet paper be given into the TOA mobile toilets?
Yes, one can use toilet paper without any problems. Because toilet paper consists of cellulose, a product won out of wood, it is broken down by the compost organisms.

Which toilet paper can be used?
Any toilet paper may be used. Paper bleached and/or treated with chemicals such as perfume or wetting agents will however slow down the composting process.

When must the toilet be emptied?
The toilet should be emptied after 3 days because the odour minimizing characteristics of the bark chips are slowly exhausted and decomposition begins inside the recyclable bags.

Where do I empty the collecting bin?
The contents of the toilet are supposed to be composted for at least a year. Closed compost bins that are protected against rain are suited best.

How do I empty the collecting container?
The collecting container is taken with the bag inside out of the toilet and is brought to the compost. The decomposable bag is given on the compost as a whole. The bag should not be sealed, so that the degrading organisms can have unhindered access to the material. For the transport, one can lock the collecting container with the cover.

Is it necessary to rinse the container after emptying it?
If bags are attached to the collecting container, cleaning is not necessary.

No. The TOA mobile toilets are equipped with special toilet seats that are not standard practice.

Are connections required for the TOA mobile toilets?
No. The TOA mobile toilets function independent of connections for water, air or electricity.

Can bark chips and toilets also be delivered to small garden communities?
In single orders, a postal address is required. Larger quantities (delivery on a pallet) can be delivered per shipping to a small garden, as far as it is accessible by truck.

FAQs concerning accessories for dry toilets

What is bark chips? SAWI biocom bark chips are a pure natural product. It contains a mixture of dried and shredded untreated pine wood bark of different size. There are no additives as peat, disinfectants, chemicals or artificial odour-absorbent materials. It contains natural tannin, which does not hinder the composting process.

How long does a bag of SAWI biocom bark chips last? 100 l of SAWI biocom bark chips last for approx. one gardening season (April-October, 2 people/weekend).

Can other materials be mixed in with the SAWI biocom bark chips? Yes. Up to 1/3 of the bark chips can be replaced by wood chips, saw dust or shredded wood.

Can the SAWI biocom bark chips be entirely replaced by other litter? Yes, suitable materials are for example wood chips, saw dust, shredded wood or peat. However, these materials are not as odour-absorbent as SAWI biocom bark chips, which may result in a more frequent need to empty the collecting bin. Peat is, moreover, a raw material worthy of environmental protection and should only be used in exceptional cases.
